Rigging Inspection Checklist

A Practical Rigging Inspection Checklist for Everyday Lift Prep
A good rigging inspection checklist helps teams slow down and verify the condition of lifting gear before a load ever leaves the ground. This web-based tool is designed for quick, structured review of common equipment such as synthetic slings, wire rope slings, chain slings, shackles, hooks, eye bolts, and below-the-hook devices. Instead of relying on memory alone, users can walk through clear inspection points, mark each item as pass, fail, or not applicable, and see the inspection status update in real time.
Built for Fast Field Review
The checklist includes core checks that apply across many gear types, such as legible identification, visible damage, distortion, corrosion, and missing safety parts where required. It also adapts to the selected equipment, so the prompts stay relevant to the gear being reviewed.
Clear Results Without Extra Complexity
This rigging inspection checklist summarizes failed items, notes, and recommended actions in one place. That makes it easier to flag equipment for review or removal from service before a lift begins. It’s a practical support tool for crews, supervisors, and safety-minded operators who want a cleaner, more consistent lifting gear inspection workflow while still following employer procedures and manufacturer criteria.
FAQs
Does this tool replace a formal rigging inspection or a competent person’s judgment?
No. This checklist is a decision-support aid for reviewing common rigging conditions before use. It does not replace formal inspection records, employer procedures, manufacturer instructions, OSHA or ASME requirements, or the judgment of a competent person. If there’s any doubt about a sling, shackle, hook, eye bolt, or below-the-hook device, the safest path is to stop and have it evaluated under your company’s inspection process.
How does the inspection result get decided?
The tool looks at the checklist responses as you complete them. If any critical item is marked fail, the overall result changes to Remove From Service. If the failed items are advisory rather than immediately disqualifying, the result can show Use With Review. If every required item is marked and passes, it shows Pass Inspection. If required items are left unanswered, the result stays at Incomplete Inspection so nothing gets missed.
What kinds of rigging gear can I inspect with this checklist?
The checklist is designed for common categories such as synthetic slings, wire rope slings, chain slings, shackles, hooks, eye bolts, and below-the-hook devices. Each category includes a base set of checks, like tag legibility, distortion, corrosion, heat damage, and missing safety components, plus equipment-specific items such as broken wires, birdcaging, stretched links, damaged latches, cuts, melted fibers, or worn fittings.
